Walgreens – New Rewards Program in September

by SuzyQ on August 8, 2012

I’ve been reading up on the new rewards pogram coming to Walgreens in September (Register Rewards will be ending).  The changes don’t make me very happy.  It’s set up so that instead of Register Rewards that give you money back (in the form of a coupon) at the time of your purchase, the points will instead be added to your loyalty card.  Each 1,000 points is equal to $1.00, but you need at least 5,000 points to cash them in ($5.00).

Mashup Mom has detailed the program on her site, along with pictures highlighting the changes.

Here are the major problems I see with this new program:

  1. No instant “cash back” which has been a reason for shopping at Walgreens
  2. The “rewards” are a lot lower than the Register Rewards (see the razor example in Mashup Mom’s post – a $0.50 reward instead of $3.00)

At the end of her post, she states that “couponers hated the program” in areas where the program was tested.  This new program at Walgreens doesn’t really give me an incentive to shop there.

What do you think of this reward program?  Will you continue to shop at Walgreens or take your business elsewhere?
